Please Give Blood in Honor of Ted Miller

METALCON International is the premier annual event for those involved in Metal Construction Products, Technologies, and Solutions and will be held next week in Chicago.  Conspicuously absent this year will be our co-founder, Ted Miller.  Ted has been associated with the event’s sponsor, the Metal Construction Association, for many years and currently serves as a Director.  Some of you attending METALCON know that Ted was diagnosed with Stage IV colon cancer over TEN years ago.  Most people with this diagnosis die within two years and the five year survivor rate is only 8%, but Ted has been that one in a million patient who, with great resolve, and a great medical team in his corner, has beaten the incredible odds.  Due to some recent complications, however, Ted has been hospitalized twice and during these hospital stays he has received 10 units of blood.

This week’s blog is simple and to the point.  If you personally know Ted, then you know him to be a man of character, generosity, and compassion.  If in any way you have been fortunate enough to interact with him over his distinguished career, then I am asking you to donate blood in his honor.  It is a simple act, but it would mean a great deal to Ted, to his wife and sons, and to his Miller-Clapperton family.

We are currently organizing a blood drive within our company and will have a Red Cross mobile blood donation bus visiting our facility very soon.  Our hope is to have 100% employee participation.

Are you absolutely petrified of needles or in some way physically unable to donate?  Then I have another option for you.  Please consider a donation to the American Cancer Society in Ted’s honor:  Donate Here.

Thanks for reading and thank you for considering this request.  We all have full calendars and financial obligations, but taking the time to give blood or making a modest monetary donation to cancer research could save someone like Ted’s life.  I am sure you would agree this would be time or money well spent.

Project of the Week, Day, etc. –
Fittingly, this week’s featured project is the American Red Cross Southern Blood Services Region Headquarters located in Douglasville, GA.  Miller-Clapperton fabricated and installed fascia/soffits, canopies, and column covers for the building in 2006.

An Eye Opening Visit

A few months ago, Kit Emert, a trusted friend in our industry, told me that there was a man he had met that I should get to know. When Kit tells me something, I listen. His information and guidance over the years have proven to be “right on the money.”

He said, “There is a man in Spain that has really impressed me and has more energy than any three men have a right to have.” The man was Clemente Gonzalez Soler. Clemente owns and operates Grupo Aliberico, which is the parent company of several businesses. They operate in the following business lines: Coatings, Buildings, Transport, Foil, Packaging and Distribution.

Recently I had the opportunity to visit their production facility in Miranda de Ebro, Spain. This facility is located in northern Spain, in a beautiful area known for the wine that is produced there, in the Rioja valley.

This production facility produces Alucoil®, metal composite material sheets, Larcore A2®, and aluminum honeycomb panels. They also have multiple coil coating lines, including a coil coating line for powder coatings.

As many of you know, Miller Clapperton is centered on the design, fabrication, and installation of highly engineered wall systems. The overwhelming impression with which I left after visiting this facility was wow; I am relieved to see that there is another company that has the confidence in our industry demonstrated by the investment and dedication of Alucoil.

Their facility was spotless and spacious. Their quality assurance measures were abundant. Their labs were “state of the art” and active. They had invested in many automated measures to make their product efficient and controllable.

In short, their facility was very impressive. But, that is only the beginning. The people were more impressive than the facility. They were very smart. Their technical knowledge about the industry, not only the product, was impressive. They displayed great enthusiasm for their work and seemed very motivated to do the “next great thing.”

When you extrapolate this facility to the several other facilities within Grupo Aliberico, it seems almost impossible that this entire company has been built from 1996. Clemente started as an entrepreneur in that year and has built a substantial company from scratch in this very short period of time.

If his office was in Atlanta rather than Madrid, we could all say that the “American dream is alive and well.” Maybe we should say that the “Entrepreneurial dream is alive and well” and exists in many parts of the world.

These are exciting times to be in business.

Thanks,

Ted S. Miller
