This week, the winners of the 2020 International Photography Awards (IPA) were announced, which showcases some of the most outstanding photographic work from around the World. This year’s contest received 13,000 total entries from 120 countries across various genres and styles. An international jury of renowned photography experts were tapped to judge the competition in the midst of a very challenging year.

“In these unprecedented times, this year’s entries reflect some of the biggest challenges facing our generation – not the least of which is dealing with a virus which, for the first time, is an event that has affected every person on earth in some way. We see photography at its best – whether covering the Covid pandemic, or the world’s uprising against injustice – the images captured are breathtaking. I can easily say these are the best images I have seen in the last decades,” said IPA’s founder and president, Hossein Farmani. The West Hollywood Park Auditorium and Aquatic Center were torn down to make way for a new Aquatic and Recreation Center, which is part of Phase II of West Hollywood Park’s master plan. In addition to the Center, there will be two off-leash dog parks, expanded green spaces with landscaping, picnic areas, and public art, plus an updated children’s playground. The four-level, 75,000-square-foot structure will house a competition pool, two rooftop swimming pools, and a multi-sport court. MillerClapperton is fabricating 8,000 square feet of Metal Composite Material for the project.

A name can mean everything or nothing at all when it comes to how a building is branded. When an address is more than a name or building number, it can translate directly into a symbol of wealth and prestige. Take Park Avenue in New York for example, and the tallest residential tower in the country, 432 Park Avenue. It doesn’t actually sit on the renowned street, but instead its neighboring lot to the east is on Park Avenue. The mega structure actually faces a less iconic street, however, an inflated valuation exists, but that doesn’t happen everywhere. How do places in the world differ in how they brand buildings and streets in cities, and what does that tell us about their urban culture?

In honor of the 100th anniversary of American’s first radio station, we take a look at the evolution of radios with the help of Architect Magazine and the Building Technology Heritage Library (BTHL). As part of their monthly series that explores the historical applications of building materials and systems, they examine the various ways radio connects with architecture throughout the library’s catalogs from the 20th century. In its early years, the household radio was encased in a “console”, usually made of wood and was designed as a piece of furniture to compliment a space. It later became less viewed as furniture and more like an appliance housed in a (sometimes colorful) plastic case.

British design journalist Frances Anderton first visited Los Angeles in 1987 as a reporter for Architectural Review. She found herself in the middle of the city’s vibrant design scene and permanently relocated to the city in 1991. She became an editor at LA Architect, but she is most well known for her beloved program ‘DnA: Design and Architecture’. In this interview, she talks about the challenges of describing buildings over the airwaves, the personalities of architects, and persistent issues she’s seen play out in LA’s built environment.
