As the year begins to draw to a close, we take a look back on the architecture of 2018 which inspired us and pushed the boundaries of modern design. This year we learned from not only the extraordinary, but the ordinary, as well. We were inspired by Auhaus Architecture and The Courtyard House, and charmed by the linear sequence of Pezo von Ellrichshausen’s Rode House. We even discovered the top architecture apps, and the perks of dating an architect!
Every day hundreds of architects from around the world send ArchDaily the best and brightest in architecture projects, news suggestions and building product recommendations. Find this years best ranked architecture projects, articles, and products here, within ArchDaily’s 2018 Best Architecture of the Year.

How would you judge a building? Would you first assess the quality of the materials used, or perhaps you might take the buildings sustainability into consideration? Is there even a such thing as a good or bad building? The answer is a resounding yes. A building can absolutely be categorized as good or bad (to different degrees), and people don’t need experts to tell them whether a building is good or bad either. One of the several ways of judging a structure, is to use Alexander’s “Mirror of the Self” Test. The method begins with asking yourself this one question, discover the question here.

The U.S. Government implemented a 25 percent tariff on imported steel, and a 10 percent tariff on imported aluminum in March, earlier this year. Increases impacted domestic steel and aluminum, and costs increased on all construction products using the materials. At the same time steel and aluminum costs were rising, demand for those materials also increased. Some companies in the construction supply chain adjusted their process of estimating work and materials, and sought alternative material choices as well. Click here to learn all the conditions that contributed to the recent growth in the industry.
