Advances in technology have made it possible to transform previously static structures into highly adaptive and adaptable buildings. Now, a new research project aims to integrate real-time human responses to the built environment in order to boost energy efficiency.
“Going beyond the concept of smart buildings, the project leverages human intelligence by creating a responsive system that communicates real-time resource usage. The system equips buildings with ‘express’ data from building electrical, thermal comfort, air quality, water, natural gas, lighting, and audiovisual systems through sensory outputs…the system leverages human senses to communicate resource benchmarking, ensuring occupants can readily discern whether the building is in a positive, neutral, or negative state about its resource usage. While the project is still in the research phases, it has seen promising prototypes that seek to enhance occupants’ relationships with buildings.”

When choosing a laptop for architectural work, does a Mac or a PC offer more advantages? While many professionals may think they know the answer, the truth is a little more nuanced, depending on the specific type of design or the stage of one’s career. This considered and surprisingly even-handed article from Architizer explores the pros, cons, and highly subjective nature of the choice:
“It’s a question that has attracted unending debate on forums across the internet for years — not just among architects, but for aspiring design professionals of all kinds. The perceived finality of selecting a work computer makes this a difficult choice, particularly for students just starting out…As you master the computer’s native software, navigate its technical quirks and learn to love your hardware, it’s quite possible that you will use that type of computer for the rest of your life in architecture.”
