The past fifteen months have been anything but usual for an industry that went into 2020 with an optimistic outlook and moving full steam ahead. The pandemic initially sent shockwaves through the industry, but construction contractors banded together to ensure jobsites stayed open and were deemed essential. Securing this essential status helped contractors avoid heavy losses and aggregate revenue for 2020 reached $414.9 billion making it another record year (by a slim margin). With more than $14 billion in revenue, Turner Construction overtook Bechtel as the largest contractor by revenue, who previously held the top spot for two decades on Engineering News-Record’s Top 400 contractors list. Fluor, Kiewit, and Whiting-Turner rounded out the top five. The Tallahassee Orthopedic Clinic (TOC) opened the doors to its second location last year to serve their growing patient community with cutting-edge medical care. The new facility includes TOC Now, which is a convenient urgent care for injuries such as strains, fractures, and sports issues. It is also equipped with 62 exam rooms, X-ray, procedure rooms, and physical therapy. MillerClapperton fabricated 200 square feet of Metal Composite Material for the project.

Last week, The Economist Intelligent Unit (EIU) released the results of its annual Global Liveability Index, which for the first time, took into the account the impact of a global pandemic. The Index examines 140 cities worldwide to quantify the challenges presented to an individual’s lifestyle in the past year. Each city is assigned a livability score for more than 30 qualitative and quantitative factors across five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure. Australia, Japan, and New Zealand took leading positions, while European and Canadian cities fell in the rankings, and U.S. cities Honolulu and Houston bounced up in the rankings over the past six months. As travel ramps up domestically and abroad, airports are seeing the highest number of passengers they’ve seen in more than a year. gb&d Magazine interviewed Bernardo Gogna, chief development officer at Los Angeles World Airports to understand the changing nature of airport design and LAXs own upcoming projects. Most importantly, “airport design will need to support the overall goals of restoring passenger confidence in air travel.” This will take into consideration social distancing and rethinking passenger processes like check-in and ticketing. Cleanliness will also be an important part of the equation, which includes the concept of “cleanliness theater”. It will be “important to demonstrate cleanliness through janitorial regiments and thoughtful selection of building materials.”

Danish artist and sculptor Bjorn Norgaard reflects on his architectural work and philosophy in an extensive interview with Louisiana Channel. He goes on to describe the strong influence of his mentor in the 1960s and how it shaped his own approach to architecture and other forms of art. Following experimentation with various forms of artistic expression in the 60s and 70s, Norgaard began to reflect more on the architecture around him and how three-dimensional space can shape mood and wellbeing. Today, he is insistent that architects should attach considerable importance to material lifespan and think in the long term.
