From Chicago’s iconic Chrysler Building to Montreal’s Biosphere, steel was selected for prominent projects throughout the 21st century as a material of choice by architectural innovators. When it was first introduced at the start of the 20th century, steel was (and still is) considered one of the most innovative construction developments in history. You may be surprised to know that the most successful steel-making process was invented in 1855, but it wasn’t until 1890 that the process was refined enough for construction. 1300 4th Street is the second phase of a two-building project that will deliver 10,750 square feet of retail space below 134 units. The project is located in Washington DC’s up-and-coming Union Market neighborhood and its urban design features a dark grey exterior with large expanses of glass and steel. For the project, MillerClapperton is fabricating 2,848 square feet of Profiled Single Skin and 5,235 square feet of 1/8″ and 1/4″ Plate Aluminum.
