The American Institute of Architects (AIA) has announced the winning projects of this year’s Committee on the Environment (COTE) Top Ten Awards. The annual contest is the industry’s best-known award program for sustainable design excellence. Each year, ten innovative projects are recognized for their integration of design excellence with environmental performance. The projects were submitted in 10 categories – integration, community, ecology, water, economy, energy, wellness, resources, change, and discovery. “The data points demonstrate just how extensively the design teams have reduced the impact of this year’s winning projects on the environment.” Keep reading for a complete list of winners showcasing projects from coast to coast.

The College Community School District added a new Early Childhood Center (ECC) in the Fall of 2019. The 19,614 square-foot, single-story building was designed for the district’s youngest learners, and consolidated much of their early childhood programming. For this project, MillerClapperton fabricated 4,600 square feet of High Pressure Laminate Material in three colors.

Doodling has long been recognized for its ability to drive our creativity and it can be argued that it’s a key component to learning. The act of doodling is said to unlock our brains so that our creative juices flow. It also allows us to think differently, which is crucial to creativity. Architects can provide many different experiences and understanding the relationship between body and space is fundamental to the design. There are various scales that encompass the work of an architect, from buildings to furniture, and perhaps no one understands that more than Marcelo Ferraz. He is the co-founder of Brasil Arquitetura and Marcenaria Barauna.

ArchDaily asks him about comfort, the importance of respecting cultural differences, and the practice of architecture and furniture design. Ferraz also talks about his career and decades long collaboration with Lina Bo Bardi, with whom he produced a whole range of designs with various approaches to the connection between space and its users.
