IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

One benefit, long enjoyed by metal composite material (MCM), is the ability of the panel to deflect under load and return back to flat once the load is removed. Even with this ability, there is a limit to how far MCM panels are allowed to deflect. IBC Table 1604.3 defines the deflection limits of construction materials including metal roofing and siding. While MCM is not specifically listed, footnote “a” discusses “structural roofing and siding made of formed metal sheets” and allows the deflection of these materials to be L/60. MCM has long been included in this group and L/60 is recognized as a limiting factor. To read more about how deflection is regulated for wall cladding and how / why the limits exist, check out the latest whitepaper from the Metal Construction Association below.

Recommendation: Architecture’s Mental Health & Burnout Problem
Produced By: The Second Studio Podcast
May is Mental Health Awareness Month and as many organizations aim to reduce the stigma surrounding mental health disorders, architects stand out among those most affected by the mental health crisis. This isn’t necessarily a new phenomenon, but the issue is perceived differently by different generations, which is explored more deeply by architects David Lee and Marina Bourderonnet in a recent episode of the Second Studio Podcast.

Click below to listen as they discuss why looking to other colleagues and professions can be helpful but also not helpful, passion as a solution and problem, the inherent complexity of architecture, architects being undervalued, whether or not architecture school should change, the instability of a project-based practice, and the main reasons for poor mental health and burnout existing in architecture and how they can be addressed.
