Located among the Union Market, NoMa, Bloomingdale and Eckington neighborhoods, The Florian offers 388 residential units ranging from studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom residences with curated amenities and unparalleled access to the best of DC’s dining, shopping and culture. Developed by Aria Development Group and designed by Cunningham Quill Architects and Morris Adjmi Architects, the 14-story, 468,000-square-foot Florian offers a collection of amenities infused with a unique blend of Italian style and DC savvy. Features include an outdoor spa and sundeck; terrace with panoramic views and dining; roof lounge and coworking hub; gourmet kitchen and cinema; rooftop firepit lounge; high-performance gym; pet spa; bicycle storage; parking garage and EV charging stations. For the project, which is expected to open this fall, MillerClapperton fabricated and installed 10,000 square feet of MCM and 4,000 square feet of Profiled Metal Panels.

The building industry is constantly changing as designers aim to push the envelope with sustainable design. Regenerative design has become a newer focus with a variety of frameworks to guide design. Each framework—such as LEED, the AIA Framework for Design Excellence, Mott MacDonald and HDR—have different requirements. The overall goal remains the same though: to reverse negative impacts and provide positive contributions to the three pillars of sustainability. In this article on USGBC, LEED Fellow Eddy Santosa discusses the five key design principles designers should be implementing to achieve their regenerative design goals.

Over the last few years, the discussion about 3-D printing in architecture has increased. One of its most significant advantages is the ability to materialize complex designs with speed and precision, while reducing waste by using specific amounts of the necessary materials. 3-D printing technology also allows small firms and individuals to create their own custom components. While the use of 3-D printing in architecture and construction is still limited to printing models of actual designs, this article looks at what could happen if we could 3-D print entire cities and the opportunities that could unlock.
