Like many of you, I’ve been following the data center market, and some of the headlines seem to contradict each other.
Projects are being delayed by power availability, permitting, financing, and community resistance. Some may sit for months. Others may never get built.
But once those hurdles are cleared, the conversation seems to change almost immediately.
How fast can we build it?
That creates an interesting problem.
The time lost getting a project ready and/or approved doesn’t necessarily get added back to the construction schedule. In many cases, the opposite happens. Months of uncertainty on the front end can turn into pressure to make up time on the back end.
That can create real risk.
It also makes planning difficult.
A project may appear to be coming, then stall. Another may sit quietly for months and suddenly become urgent. So even in a market with strong demand, it can be hard to know what will actually happen and when.
Maybe that is the real contradiction.
The market isn’t simply slowing down or speeding up.
Projects are taking longer to become real, and once they do, everyone wants them faster.
