Located in the historic Harlem District in Albany, GA, the new Albany Transportation Center preserves the aesthetic, historic, cultural and environmental characteristics of the district. The legacy of the civil rights movement figured into the plans for the project, which not only improves transportation options but also aims to revitalize the city’s downtown area. The architect designed two exhibits for the project, a wall display inside the main lobby that depicts the lunch counter sit-ins staged at the former Trailways Bus Terminal in 1961, and a plaza that commemorates activist Ola Mae Quarterman, who is known as Albany’s Rosa Parks. The 10,327-square-foot facility features a transfer island with 12 bays, Greyhound bus slips and terminal, operations and dispatch facilities, a public computer lab, and community rooms for small gatherings. For this project, MillerClapperton fabricated and installed metal composite material (MCM) and terracotta panels.
