IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

“Although an architectural project comes to life with palpable materials, it is also defined by intangible qualities that give it richness, dynamism, and liveliness. Among them, the interplay of light and shadow can transform environments and affect their perception, determining the user’s spatial experience. Besides providing natural ventilation, privacy, and thermal comfort, lattices allow this duality by filtering the entry of sunlight while projecting repetitive figures on the surface. In this way, perforated walls and ceilings can create multiple geometric patterns of light and shadow that become design elements capable of generating unique atmospheres.

Therefore, beyond their functionality, perforated skins also gain a decorative and aesthetic value defined by unlimited design possibilities. Through a wide range of materials and fabrication methods – traditional or digital –, countless shapes, patterns and colors can be achieved.” Explore 7 remarkable projects and the materials and techniques that make them possible below. You can also see completed projects with perforated skins on our website or learn more about the capabilities of MillerClapperton’s metal shop here.

If you aren’t in the holiday spirit by now, there’s no time to waste. Consider planning a trip to one of the premier light shows in the country to find some Christmas joy. “Holiday lights – whether they be Yule logs or candles on Christmas trees – have been around for centuries, but it wasn’t until 1882 that electric lights made it on the scene. Plus, it took several more decades before they were widely (and cheaply) available. Today, homes and businesses regularly deck their halls, trees and exteriors with lights, some creating enormous spectacles that draw crowds year after year. Whether you prefer small displays that pack a festive punch or flashy shows full of glitz and glamour, the colorful spectacles on the list below are sure to bring you plenty of holiday cheer.”

Now is as good a time as any to get organized for the holidays or to plan to start the New Year off on the right foot. If you love making lists (and who doesn’t), you may not realize one of the best apps available is Apple’s Notes app. Over the years, this app has gotten upgrade after upgrade with each iOS update. Notes now has drawing tools, photo scanning capabilities, and smart features like tags to help keep you organized, but one of the coolest features is the ability to share notes in real-time. As the writer of Friday5 (that’s me!), I can personally attest to how useful this feature is for things like creating a household shopping list or keeping track of gifts and who has bought what for the grandkids. Check out more tips on how to make the most of Notes below.

Recommendation: Dig it! Building Bound to the Ground
Interviewed By: Architect Magazine
Dig it! Building Bound to the Ground (Taschen, 2021) is a nearly 1,390 page, 6 pound book that is the culmination of a decade’s worth of work and a unique collaboration between Bjarne Mastenbroek, founder and director of the Amsterdam-based firm SeARCH, and Dutch architectural photographer, Iwan Baan. The book explores architecture built in relationship with the Earth’s crust, which is organized into six chapters – Bury, Embed, Absorb, Spiral, Carve, and Mimic. Architect Magazine interviewed Mastenbroek and talked about how Dig It! came to life. You can check out their interview and learn more about the book below.
