Circularity as a Value Proposition Header Image

Recycling building materials has created a budding revolution in the AEC industry that has benefits for both the environment and business value. The push to decarbonize the building sector is leading to more opportunities for renovations and retrofits, which are primed for the uptake in circularity. This article in Building Enclosure looks at some key reasons to integrate circular practices into building design and construction.

Named after former Emeryville Councilmember Nellie Hannon, this new construction project features 90 affordable rental apartments serving low-income households above community-serving commercial space. The Emeryville Citizens Assistance Program (ECAP), a nonprofit food assistance program founded by Hannon, will occupy the ground-floor commercial space. The seven-story building will have a mix of studios, one-, two- and three-bedroom apartments, as well as a large, third-level landscaped courtyard, a community room, secure car and bike parking, on-site property management and resident services offices. Additionally, the building’s façade features a mural by local artist Joaquin Newman. MillerClapperton is fabricating 1,400 square feet of Metal Composite Material (MCM) for this project, which should be completed later this year.

Throughout the world, urbanization continues to gain momentum, generating visible and structural transformations within contemporary cities. The World Bank notes that the urban population will continue to trend upward, with 90% of new urban residents concentrated in Asia and Africa. This amount of growth raises questions on how to consolidate a design approach that ensures equitable access to spaces, resources and services, while making emerging and consolidated metropolises more inclusive and accessible.
