The construction of the Atrium Health Carolina Rehabilitation facilities is the first step, of many, in the modernization of Atrium Health’s Carolinas Medical Center campus. This new facility will be a one-of-a-kind regional rehabilitation hospital, thoughtfully designed with the latest state-of-the-art technology and programs to better serve patients and the surrounding communities. When the construction is complete, this new specialized hospital will boast some impressive numbers, such as a 150,000-square-foot replacement hospital, 70 private patient rooms, a 9,300 square-foot outpatient clinic, an outdoor therapy challenge garden, an aquatic therapy program, and a center for independent living. The new hospital is slated to open in mid-to-late 2022. For this project, MillerClapperton will fabricate 49,690 square feet of Metal Composite Material and 4,035 square feet of Profile Single Skin.

One of the most reliable ways of keeping exterior walls dry, or allowing them to dry out when they do get wet, is to construct an assembly with an outer protective shell, known as a rainscreen. The assembly comprises, at minimum, an outer layer, a protected inner layer, and a cavity between them to allow for the passive removal of liquid and water vapor. Although the term “rainscreen” emerged in the 1960s, earlier examples date back to the 19th century and are effective at managing moisture and provide exceptional opportunities for energy-efficient performance.
