“With its rustic appearance, weathering steel has become a popular design option for both roofing and wall façades. Often known as Corten steel, weathering steel has a unique appearance that makes it ideal for all types of buildings and applications. And in recent years, it’s been making the move from rural, southwestern locations to more urban and suburban applications across the United States.

With its unique design aesthetic, weathering steel can be found on all types of buildings and in all industries—residential, commercial, industrial. “It is being used not only in exterior applications but has become an accepted and fairly standard finish even in interior settings,” says Sebastian Schmaling, AIA, LEED, AP, principal at Johnsen Schmaling Architects in Milwaukee. “I think the material has established itself beyond any stylistic connotations and has proven itself to be more than just a passing fad.”

Pictured above is one such project – the Grant Park Gateway parking garage located in Atlanta, which incorporates nearly 15,000 square feet of perforated, 12-gauge Corten steel, fabricated and installed by MillerClapperton.

Located just off the Beltline, the Atlanta Dairies redevelopment transforms a historic icon of Reynoldstown into a new center of gravity for Atlanta’s vibrant Eastside neighborhoods. Framing the plaza is the historic building, now with a second-story addition, a brand-new office building, and a 2,200-seat music venue. The play of vintage and contemporary facades is a nod to the layered history the client was determined to preserve in this legacy space for the city. MillerClapperton fabricated 2,800 square feet of Equitone Fiber Cement material.
