Beyond the traditional learning modalities of books and lectures is the effect that the environment itself has on learning. As a result, advancements in education and neuroscience are guiding design strategies to reveal which environmental factors benefit the learning process. 

It’s no surprise that today’s top academic institutions are competing to attract the best and brightest, and in response, they are offering students a wider variety of amenities, including accommodations for different learning styles in order to create inclusive and diverse student bodies. The emphasis is being put on placemaking – where there is a clear sense of place and students can comfortably engage with their surroundings and each other.

The Plaza Coral Gables was conceived with the business district in mind. The new development will help to revitalize the city and brings a truly mixed-used experience with a high-end, 242-room hotel it luxury hotel, street-level shopping and dining, residential townhomes and apartments, in addition to a 1-acre open public plaza. For this project, MillerClapperton is fabricating 12,828 square feet of Metal Composite Material.

This week, the World celebrated the 50th Earth Day at a time where our relationship with Earth and the environment around us is vastly different from normal. This pandemic has forced us to examine the impact of humans on the planet when it’s evident that the effects can be profoundly positive due to less demand for oil, transport, and energy. When the world returns to “normal”, the nature of that normal will fall in part to the responsibility of architects and designers as we look at the future relationship between us and Earth.

A new virtual photography and architecture event has launched this week called Zoomed In. Running through today, the festival brings together a diverse international section of architectural photography and cross-disciplinary creatives. It features online talks and discussions, short film screenings, and image galleries, all in an effort to raise funds for those in need in the midst of the current crisis. Organizers say it’s a unique opportunity for the community to engage the public by creating informative programs that are curated by industry experts.
