#1 AIA/ALA Library Building Awards

As National Architecture Week comes to close, we want to highlight the six designs that were recognized in this year’s AIA/ALA Library Building Awards.  The project recipients were awarded for excellence in architectural design, and reflected new trends in library design.  According to the AIA, traditional roles of libraries are evolving.  Today, libraries are designed with larger gathering spaces to support the community and many include sustainable features to conserve water and energy.  Both of these trends were reflected by this year’s recipients, including Laurel Branch Library, designed by Grimm + Parker Architects.

MillerClapperton is proud to have been a part of this outstanding project by fabricating and installing more than 6,000 square feet of High-Pressure Laminate material panels.  Read more about the Laurel Branch project and other winners here.

#2 UPDATE: CONSTRUCTION CONFIDENCE INDEX

2018 started with an optimistic outlook as commercial and industrial construction professionals exhibited confidence in sales and staffing for the first six months.  According to the latest Construction Confidence Index (CCI), signals point to continuing progress with each of the three areas (staffing levels, sales and profits) remaining above 50 in the diffusion index.  However, results revealed the average contractor is less confident about profit margins than a year ago.  Read more about the survey’s findings and the outlook of Chief Economist, Anirban Basu of Associated Builders and Contractors, here.

#3 HIDDEN MASTERPIECES

One thing New Yorkers are known for is being in a rush, especially when it comes to getting from place to place.  If you live there or have ever visited and descended to the depths of the city’s subways, have you stopped long enough to take a look around?  When you look beyond the masses of people among other distractions, there’s a world of architecture and design (some centuries old) to be admired.  Philip Ashforth Coppola has spent decades sketching the most iconic art in New York City’s subway system.  The first commercial version of his drawings is being published for the general public, a volume titled “One Track Mind: Drawing the New York Subway”.  Read more about his work and see more sketches here.
