IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

With statewide and even city specific mandates being announced across the country at a breakneck pace, it’s no small feat to keep track of what’s happening and where. As quickly as COVID-19 has impacted our daily lives, it’s also impacting those of us in the construction industry, as governors and local authorities make decisions between keeping businesses open and issuing stay-at-home mandates. Within those mandates are provisions for “essential businesses”, and thankfully, few states have considered construction non-essential up to this point. To help us all manage the never-ending stream of data, Architect Magazine has put together a dashboard to track how states with stay-at-home mandates classify Construction and Building Material suppliers. The map is updated as additional resources and details become available and we recommend you keep it handy for staying up to date.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this is particularly true when it comes to architecture. While most would agree that architecture is best understood and enjoyed when it’s experienced in person, that may be nearly impossible for most of us today. It is possible however, for a good photograph to illuminate an architect’s ideas and tell a compelling story about a building, revealing something profound. To kick-off Architizer’s ‘One Photo Challenge’ they’ve shared a collection of the most influential photographs of architecture ever produced to serve as a source of inspiration.

Recommendation: Interview with Rem Koolhaas
Interview By: Co.Design

Co.Design recently spoke with the legendary architectural critic and designer, Rem Koolhaas, about one of the most unusual architecture exhibits of the year, Countryside, the Future. The exhibit, housed at the now shuttered Guggenheim, is a collaboration between Rem Koolhaas and Samir Bantal, and it explores how the world’s non-urban territories might one day be designed. “As the urban environment becomes more saturated (half of the world’s population currently calls cities home) designers are starting to consider what rural living might look like.” Before the museum closed, Co.Design spoke with Koolhaas and Bantal about investment in rural communities and climate change.
