General Contractor: Brasfield & Gorrie, LLC
Architect: HKS
Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital is Louisiana’s premier pediatric facility, boasting 350,000 square feet of cutting-edge equipment to support over 80 pediatric specialists in delivering top-notch care to young patients. Designers collaborated closely with hospital staff and families to craft a pediatric facility that reflects Louisiana’s natural beauty and fosters a soothing atmosphere for young patients. Drawing inspiration from the state’s diverse ecosystems, the hospital’s design incorporates elements reminiscent of Louisiana’s piney woods, bayous, and coastlines. Playful illustrations, carved wood features, and colorful artwork featuring “animal ambassadors” from local ecosystems guide patients through the hospital while educating them about Louisiana’s nature. Sunlight streams through colored glass into the lobby, where sculpted benches and circular seating niches provide spaces for relaxation and play. Inspired by stained glass windows, the exterior architecture gives the hospital its distinct identity within the Baton Rouge campus. This facility offers advanced pediatric care, specialized programming, and a welcoming environment that provides moments of joy and positive distraction along the patient journey. MillerClapperton fabricated approximately 53,000 square feet of Metal Composite Material for this project.

Colors aren’t just shades; they’re powerful tools of expression in architecture, shaping our built environment and infusing designs with personality and vitality. Architects worldwide are embracing vibrant palettes to captivate, challenge, and redefine spaces. From La Muralla Roja’s homage to North African citadels to the playful design of The Couch in Amsterdam and the vibrant domes of Presence in Hormuz 02, color transforms structures into cultural landmarks. Barê House in Brazil and the Pink House in Portugal blend hues with nature, while Falcon Headquarters in Mexico City communicates innovation through its bold yellow facade. Architectural projects like Young Disabled Modules in Spain and Didden Village in the Netherlands use color to reshape narratives and advocate for urban density. Explore the transformative potential of color in architecture and subscribe to Architizer’s The Plug for daily design inspiration.

Urban planning, a complex endeavor demanding collaboration across disciplines, has evolved with the emergence of “smart cities” fueled by AI. Architects now wield algorithms to optimize designs, enhance energy efficiency, and foster dynamic interactions with surroundings through responsive architecture. AI-powered sensors and actuators adjust building environments based on occupancy and weather, while interconnected systems optimize infrastructure, predict maintenance, and respond to emergencies, bolstering urban resilience. Projects like Liam Young’s Planet City and NEOM’s The Line exemplify AI’s potential in sustainable living and futuristic city construction, while initiatives like Barcelona’s Smart City Project revitalizes existing cities, enhancing livability and efficiency through data-driven initiatives. As architects harness AI’s capabilities, they reimagine urban landscapes, shaping a brighter future for generations to come.
