It comes as no surprise that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on U.S. building markets. According to Dodge Data & Analytics, commercial and multifamily starts were healthy during January and February, but then stalled as the pandemic hit the country in March. Despite a virtual economic shutdown in April, construction resumed in some areas in May, allowing starts to post a mild gain over the month. Commercial and multifamily construction starts in the top 20 metropolitan areas posted a drop of 22% through the first six months of 2020. Despite falling 24%, the New York metro area held onto its top spot, followed by Washington DC, and the Dallas TX metro area. The Collective Apartments at Main Gate is located on Second St. near the University of Arizona in Tucson, which is part of a larger project that includes a boutique hotel. The complex will offer retail, restaurants, and a public plaza, and stands 14 stories tall with 238 apartments, 165 hotel rooms, along with a rooftop swimming pool. For this project, MillerClapperton is fabricating 1,400 square feet of Metal Composite Material.

This past year was a special year for MillerClapperton as we celebrated the company’s 40th anniversary. Also celebrating their 40th anniversary is Metal Construction News, and as part of this occasion, they reflect on the past recipients of the Metal Construction Hall of Fame. Founded in 2012, the Metal Consutrction Hall of Fame recognizes those individuals who have made an impact on the metal construction industry through their innovation, effort and leadership. We are very proud that both of MillerClapperton’s founding partners, Dave Clapperton and Ted S. Miller were recognized in the Contractor/Installer category, in 2019 and 2013 respectively.

Virtual museum tours have become a thing since in-person visits were halted amidst the pandemic and global travel has been limited. To bride that gap, insurance provider Budget Direct collaborated with U.K.-based content studio NeoMam and Serbian designer Jelena Popovic to generate GIFs that restore six UNESCO World Heritage sites to their former glory. The images give viewers a glimpse of what the sites would look like had they been preserved. Each of the six projects were researched and digitally reconstructed using historical information and design data, including the Old City of Jerusalem and the Hatra in Iraq.
