IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

Could buildings of the future be alive? Nature’s materials such as crushed shells of limestone and the timber of dead trees are already used in building, but Scientific America proposes the palette of materials could be radically extended. Mycelium for example, the root network of fungus, could be the material of the future. With the ability to grow on little more than wood chips and coffee grounds in a short period of time, resulting materials could have significant structural performance. Even NASA researchers have investigated the possibility of habitats that might reproduce themselves. To read more about the future of buildings, even those that can heal themselves, click below.

Recommendation: How I Built This Podcast

The podcast that I listen to most when driving to and from work each day is NPR’s How I Built This with Guy Raz. The podcast dives into the stories behind some of the world’s best-known companies. What I enjoy most is hearing the stories about how these companies grow from the idea of how to solve a problem into the mega companies we know them as today. Something else that stands out in each episode is the “grind” and sacrifices endured all along the way. This provides reassurance that things can and will get tough, but out of it all comes growth. I encourage everyone to start off with picking out one of your favorite companies from the list of more than 100 available. The first episode is featuring Sara Blakely’s Spanx and the most popular episode was released recently, which featured Tobias Lütke, the founder of Shopify.
