IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

Reports from across the construction industry show a slowdown in construction starts, but key markets from coast to coast are bucking that trend. Despite a dip in commercial and multifamily projects in the Top 10 US metros so far in 2023, some markets are experiencing continued growth where the outlook is anything but bleak. Trailing only New York and the Dallas metro, Atlanta’s amount of new commercial and multifamily construction ranks third across the country, closely followed by Miami. “Only metro Houston and Chicago have logged a bigger 2023 boost in construction starts, in terms of percentage growth through June, but the value of metro Atlanta’s new development eclipses both of those markets, according to the study.”

“One of the biggest questions architects and designers face is: what do we do with the buildings we inherit? While demolition yields a blank slate, it erases the historic roots of our built environments and is a wholly unsustainable practice. Extending the lifecycles of existing structures dramatically reduces the energy consumption and carbon emissions generated by constructing anew. The benefits of adaptive reuse are deeply social as well as environmental. Imbuing the fabric of the past with a purpose for the future is a special kind of alchemy.” Click below for seven winning commercial projects that demonstrate how reuse can elevate a project through pioneering designs that give reverence to the past.

Recommendation: The Mind-Blowing Machines That Stamp Millions of Metal Parts
Produced By: SmarterEveryDay

Host Destin explores the world of science on his YouTube channel, SmarterEveryDay. In the most recent episode, he explores a metal stamping facility in Alabama and takes an in-depth look at how parts are made for the machines that we use every day. He breaks down the process of sheet metal manufacturing and shows how metal is stamped out of a coil of sheet metal with the help of skilled craftsman who are experts at tool and die making.

Each application such as making manufacturing stamping dies to plastic injection molds take a unique set of skills and years of trade school and apprenticeship. The video not only shows how cool of a process it is to form metal, it also demonstrates what it takes to be a true craftsman in this field and how to get started.
