The Paris 2024 Olympics are wrapping up this weekend, and with that comes the question of what happens to the buildings used to host the events over the past two weeks? While previous Olympic games have brought about grand, jaw-dropping structures that pushed the limits of design and sustainability, this year’s Paris Olympics took a different approach by using existing venues, reducing environmental impact and creating long-term benefits for the host community. Take a look at some of the more spectacular architecture of games past and see how Paris set a new standard by mainly using existing venues.

Expected to open in September 2024, the new 20,000-square-foot Stella Boyle Smith Music Center is the Arkansas Symphony Orchestra’s first permanent home in its 58-year history. Located in Little Rock’s East Village, the new building is the state’s first-of-its-kind music-focused headquarters. The state-of-the-art facility will be a welcoming hub of musical activity for all residents, serving youth and adults of all ages with a variety of musical offerings. The building will also provide access to music education, performances and music making with new spaces and a broadcast and recording studio. MillerClapperton is fabricating and installing 5,500 square feet of Metal Composite Material panels and 620 square feet of profiled metal panels for the project.

More than 4 billion people live in cities and urban environments, more than half of the world’s population. A recent United Nations report on populations in cities notes that number is expected to climb over the next 50 years. This is leading cities worldwide to find better ways to accommodate growing populations while transitioning to more sustainable urban practices. Check out the top 20 largest cities in the world, measured by population, as well as their growth rate compared to last year.

After decades of working successfully in controlled factories, robots are making the shift to working on construction job sites. While the motivations behind the move seem obvious, with robots being able to fill in during labor shortages and having the ability to carry out tedious and repetitive tasks, there are still many challenges with on-site building with robots. The unknown factors of the construction site require more advanced sensing and reasoning technologies than those needed in a manufacturing environment.
