Engineering News-Record celebrated its ninth year of annual Best Global Projects Awards last week by announcing 33 winning projects from 20 different countries. This year saw a record number of entries with projects that demonstrate the risks and rewards-and the hurdles overcome-in designing and building internationally. A panel of industry judges “examined design and construction challenges, benefits to the local community and dedication to quality, innovation and safety, with a special emphasis on the diversity of global project teams and their collaboration.” Featured above is the construction of Bahr Al Baqar Water Treatment Plant whose project team topped 6,000 workers and earned ENR’s Project of the Year.

MUSC Health is building a new hospital in northern Williamsburg County, bringing a vast new network of health care resources and capabilities to a largely rural section of South Carolina’s Pee Dee region. The 63,500-square-foot hospital will replace the two medical facilities that now serve the area, Lake City Community Hospital, built in the 1950s, and Williamsburg Regional Hospital, built in 1965. MillerClapperton will fabricate and install 1,300 square feet of Metal Composite Material for the project.

According to Glass Magazine, 80% of metal companies who responded to their survey of Top Metal Companies, are reporting higher sales for 2021, but companies are also experiencing a unique set of challenges. Ken Simonson, chief economist for the Associated General Contractors of America recently presented the keynote address at METALCON and shared his faint optimism for improvement on costs and availability in the coming year. “There are also encouraging forward-looking indicators such as the Architecture Billings Index, Dodge Momentum Index (projects in the initial construction stage) along with an increasing number of multi-family construction permits being authorized,” said Simonson. According to Simonson, forecasted growth sectors will include solar, manufacturing (especially pharmaceuticals), data centers and rail.
