IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

Last week, Engineering News-Record announced the results of a nationwide competition, which recognizes 20 winning projects that reflect the ‘Best of the Best’ in the U.S.. Among the top projects was the Norwegian Cruise Terminal, which took top honors for the Airport/Transit category. We would like to offer our congratulations to Preston H. Haskell Co. and to all that were involved in the building of the terminal. MillerClapperton is proud to have fabricated 61,500 square feet of Metal Composite Material for the project.

After a year-long effort by nearly 100 members of the construction industry who were selected by ENR editors at various stages of the process, the chosen projects represent the pinnacle of design and construction achievement in their respective categories. The competition began last March, which resulted in 800 project teams submitting their best work to the regional Best Projects competitions. Once regional winners were chosen, the top winners in each category from reach region moved up to the national competition – around 200 projects in total. Each project was then examined to distinguish the best from the best in terms of teamwork, safety, overcoming challenges, innovation, and quality. In the Airport/Transit category, the Norwegian Cruise Terminal took the top award in ENR Southeast’s competition last September before earning the top spot in ENR’s ‘Best of the Best’ roundup last week.

While the forecast for the industry is optimistic overall, there is a new set of near- and long-term challenges that could complicate things, one of the most obvious being a tight labor market. Even with a generally positive outlook, rising inflation could pose an issue, and also lingering supply chain disruptions. Although there are always complicating factors in predicting where the design and construction industry is headed, the list is unusually long and complex this year, according to Kermit Baker, Hon. AIA. And while the construction market was expected to be the hardest hit by the pandemic, some sectors are doing surprisingly well, such as retail and repurposing existing spaces. Commercial construction activity is projected to see 5% growth this year and 5.5% in 2023.

“Though traditions established over the course of centuries, worship buildings have come to be associated with pointed arches, intricate carvings, gilded finishes, ornate domes and more. But as worship rituals adapt to current times, so has the architecture that accommodates them. This article from Architizer takes a chronological look at the development of designs that have new standards for religious buildings over the course of the past ten years. This collection demonstrates a growing global focus on geometric volumes, which will surely impact design and worship practice in the coming years.” Pictured above is the 2015 A+ Awards Popular Choice, Community Church in Knarvick, Norway.

Recommendation: Peter Cook: It Can Be Built
Produced By: Louisiana Channel

‘’The delight I get out of doing buildings is to say: Screw you, it can be built’’ says Architect Peter Cook in conversation with Louisiana Channel, where he discusses his determination to communicate ideas through vivid Architectural drawings and the skepticism he has faced in regards to his ambitious design proposals and their outlandish appearance.” He also shares how his interest in architecture began at a young age and offers insight into the benefits of hand-drawing techniques over more contemporary methods.
