#1 CONSTRUCTION JOBS INCREASE YEAR OVER YEAR

Forty states added construction jobs between November 2016 and November 2017 according to an analysis by Associated General Contractors of America.  According to the firm, most states are adding jobs amid expectations that demand will continue to grow.  States who added high numbers of new construction jobs include California, Florida, Texas and New York among others, primarily in the West and Northeast.  Association officials also note that many construction firms have high expectations for the coming year.  Read more here.

#2 NINE ARCHITECTURALLY SIGNIFICANT MUSEUMS

Cities around the world are celebrating the opening of major new museums – many of them with noteworthy architecture as inspiring as the artwork they will house.  On the list is the Museum of the Bible in Washington, D.C., which is located just blocks from the Capitol and National Mall.  Click here to see which other US museum recently opened.

#3 GREAT DIGITAL EXPERIENCES START WITH ARCHITECTS

Digital devices have found their way into our homes, bringing the digital experience into every area of our lives.  Beyond our tablets and phones, we now have gadgets intended to make our workplaces and homes smarter, from lighting to digital locks and even thermostats.  But what’s lacking is a seamless or holistic experience.  While all of these devices make our environments a bit smarter, the experience can feel disjointed at the end of the day.  At Gensler, the world’s largest architecture firm, they’ve created a new initiative to bring together our physical and digital worlds, which will be led by former creative officer, Hans Neubert.  Read more here.

#4 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

University of Florida | Stephen C. O’Connell Center
The University of Florida recently celebrated the completion of the newly-renovated Stephen C. O’Connell Center, a multi-purpose facility, which houses the Exactech Arena.  The entrance to the 36-year-old building has also been rebuilt and glistens with a more modern facade.

For this project, MillerClapperton fabricated and installed 2,200 square feet of Metal Composite Material panels, which frame the entrance on the exterior and interior of the atrium.  Once inside, fans are greeted by a Gators’ logo on the floor and an impressive Gator head mural on the wall.  In additional to hosting Gator’s basketball, the facility will also host swimming, gymnastics and volleyball matches.
