#1 EIGHT IMPOSSIBLY DYNAMIC FACADES

Technical advancements and cutting-edge trends in facade design have led to several remarkable projects that have fully embraced responsive design. Interest in this concept has become a part of the contemporary architectural discourse, either as a result of sustainability or stemming purely from a fascination with technological innovation.  These 8 projects demonstrate what’s truly possible when design and the environment intersect.

#2 BEAUTIFUL DRAWINGS BY FAMOUS ARCHITECTS

Architects are often seen as visionaries and artists in their own right.  Their artistry goes beyond the buildings themselves, illuminating talent and skill that is at the cornerstone of what they do.  “Architects are often accomplished draftsmen, some working in an exacting form with meticulous attention to detail, others choosing to out pen to paper in a more emotional, stylized manner.”  In a new book titled ‘Drawing Architecture’, more than 250 works are featured by some of the world’s best known architects.  Architectural Digest chooses their ten favorite drawings from the book and shares them here.  And, if these leave you feeling inspired, you can see the best drawing tutorials for architects on YouTube here.

#3 ARCHITECTURE IN THE TROPICS

The recent gloomy weather would make anyone crave sunshine and a warm tropical breeze.  If you can’t just get on a plane, we have the next best thing.  Picturing yourself in any one of these idyllic settings is sure to boost your mood, even if just for a few minutes.  Explore architecture from sprawling villas and city houses to rainforest cabins and beach shacks thanks to the latest book by Gestalten titled ‘Living Under the Sun’.  We invite you to see what luxe to simple living in a dream place looks like here.

#4 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

Sentara Leigh Hospital
Sentara Healthcare in Norfolk, Virginia underwent an expansion that included a new parking garage, two five-story patient bed towers, a 48-bed orthopedic and rehabilitation center, and upgrades to the hospital entrance.  The project required unique detailing and material selection for the facade to integrate new construction with the existing structure.  Metal Composite Material panels and Profile Single Skin were used to tie the project together and MillerClapperton fabricated and installed a total of 11,000 square feet of material.
