“Perhaps nothing is more humanistic than the pursuit of futuristic cities. We write about them in utopian—and dystopian—novels, offer glimpses of what they’d look like in movies and TV shows, and now, it seems, we build them too. Though designing for the future could be understood as the most basic requirement for architects and urban planners, in recent years, this goal has been taken to a new level. It seems every few months, firms unveil plans for wholly reimagined metropolitan areas: from floating cities to those in outer space, the offerings are relentless.

In these new cities, sustainable infrastructure and smart technology is often a given, and in some cases, the plans even include things that haven’t even been invented (or brought to market) yet—like flying cars or extremely high-speed autonomous transit. Still, it never hurts to dream big, right? With that in mind, AD rounded up six of the most interesting proposals for futuristic cities, some of which are already under construction. A two-tower project, 1081 Juniper, will be situated prominently on the iconic Midtown Atlanta skyline, a block West of Piedmont Park and boasting incredible views. The North tower will climb to 400 feet, with 36 stories and 320 units, while the South tower will top out at 380 feet with 33 stories and will feature larger floorplans with a more boutique offering of just 167 units. MillerClapperton will fabricate and install 131,100 square feet of Metal Composite Material for the project.

Every two years, a new city is chosen for the World Design Capital, a city project that is dedicated to promoting the design profession around the world. “The initiative recognizes cities for their constructive use of design to drive social, cultural, and environmental change and improve the overall quality of life.” Earlier this week, it was announced that San Diego and Tijuana have been named for 2024 due to their human centric design strategies and their cross-border collaboration.
