IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

Many people assume that the weight of our panels are the controlling factor in our designs, but in actuality, wind load is what’s controlling our design. As wind blows against a building, the resulting force acting on the elevations is called ‘wind load’. MillerClapperton engineers, Chris Reutlinger and David Altfeld  discuss the four main factors that affect wind load, which are also part of the building code. Another common misconception is that projects located near the coast will have higher wind loads, but that is not necessarily the case when we consider the height of a building that’s located in a city for example. We invite you to watch Episode 14 of ‘Ask the Panel Guys’ to learn how a building’s structural design absorbs wind forces safely and efficiently, and how our cladding systems are designed to meet wind load demands.

Architecture has evolved to include advanced building envelopes and innovative structural systems, leading to new boundaries being drawn. As a result of sustainable practices and more passive strategies, architects are re-imaging building skins and the relationship between interior and exterior. “While different typologies are designed with varied levels of permeability, libraries demand rigorous attention to performative facades and protected programs. This holds especially true when libraries are placed within radically changing landscapes.” Check out these unique projects below.
