While standing seam copper is often used as a roofing material, it can also be used for cladding—specifically, for 37 affordable apartments designated for senior living in New York City. “The street-facing facade is clad in standing seam copper panels which will oxidize over time, transforming from an autumnal-bronze color to a green patina. Paulo Flores, studio director of AiF, told AN, ‘We wanted to reference nature… How rare is it to have a hilly wooded site in New York City? Copper is a natural material, it will change over time. It has the kind of orange which references fall leaves, in some ways it references the brick across the street. So it’s within that kind of living material palette.’” Read more about how the architects kept project costs down while delighting in their innovative use of materials.

James Wormald discusses the increasing trend in the hospitality industry to create hotel rooms that emulate the comfort and familiarity of home, inspired by the success of services like Airbnb. Various hotels around the world are implementing features to make their spaces feel more like a home away from home. Examples include fully functional kitchens and laundry facilities in individual studios at the Bermonds Locke Hotel in London and the use of the former life as a publishing house as inspiration for rooms at the Stamba Hotel in Tbilisi. The focus is on providing privacy, separate living spaces, and natural light to enhance the guest experience, moving away from the standardized and impersonal decor found in traditional hotel rooms. The goal is to create a unique and comforting atmosphere for travelers, allowing them to feel at ease during their stay.
