Rather than simply reading about architecture, the folks at Architectural Digest want us to go out and experience the spectacular structures that will be completed in 2020. Located in the Mission Bay area of San Francisco, which was once dotted by railyards and industrial sites, is the new Owens Parking Garage, situated in what’s become a high-profile neighborhood of luxury condos, retail, restaurants, and a new campus for the University of California (UC). The four-level garage will serve multiple UC Life Science buildings and the adjacent Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Mission Bay Medical Offices. For the project, MillerClapperton is fabricating more than 1,700 square feet of Metal Composite Material.

Block parties, builders, and design, oh my! 2020 is off to a busy start with MCA’s Winter Meeting wrapping up this week, followed by the International Builder’s Show and the Surface Design Show next month. Looking ahead to this July is the National Building Museum’s 2020 Block Party, which is a summer-long exhibition that converts the museum’s great hall into an interactive installation. Word has it that the museum has selected Folger Shakespeare Library to realize Shakespeare’s Playhouse.

The 80 minute Canadian documentary by filmmaker Joseph Hillel, underlines the ever-changing city of tomorrow and the life and work of 4 women architects who reconsidered the urban environment. First released in 2018, the film showcases Phyllis Lambert, Denise Scott Brown, Cornelia Hahn Oberlander, and Blanche Lemco van Ginkel – the inspiring pioneers that observed and shaped the city of today and tomorrow.
