The American Institute of Architects (AIA) recently announced the winners of its 2021 National Architecture Photography Competition. The 40 year-old competition, which is managed by the AIA’s St. Louis chapter, showcases images of projects from around the world that feature an architectural theme or contain a component of the built and designed environment. More than 500 photographs were submitted this year and first place was awarded to Jens Vange’s for his photos of Beyond AT&T in Minneapolis featured above. Southeastrans, a non-emergency medical transportation company, is currently building a new headquarters in Villa Rica. The multi-story, 88,000-square-foot building situated on Dallas Highway is expected to house at least 300 employees. According to the architect, Alex Roush Architects, the “exterior design approach is intended to reflect the client’s drive for technology and healthcare. Through the expression of structural elements and the application of crisp composite metal panels, the aesthetic and formal exterior features strive to reflect the client’s drive for technology.” For this project, MillerClapperton is fabricating and installing 5,000 square feet of Metal Composite Material.

Malls and retail centers aren’t what they used to be, especially as consumers take advantage of more e-commerce options while the pandemic lingers. While in-person shopping was already experiencing a slowdown, the past 15 months have only accelerated this shift. As a result, more malls are being left empty, but there could be a silver lining as the demand for high-density housing continues to rise.  “Some real estate firms are predicting that more than half of all major U.S. department stores in malls will have permanently shuttered by the end of 2021, with smaller retail chains not so far behind.” Investors and developers have begun to wonder if giving a new lease on life to these empty stores might be the solution.

The Southwest has become known for its civic and monumental designs that buck the more traditional architecture that is familiar to the region. “Located on sites throughout Texas, New Mexico, and Arizona, they are designed with modern aesthetics and new ideas. Standing in contrast to the intimate, discreet spaces found within southwest residential architecture, these buildings are more prominent landmarks and nodes within their respective cities.” Below are several projects that use distinct envelopes and screens to craft memorable exterior experiences. Despite the surrounding buildings or landscapes that mix many different styles, “these designs looks forward with new materials, spatial typologies, and conceptual ideas.”

German architect Axel Ritter has defined smart materials as “highly engineered materials that respond intelligently to their environment.” While the first commercial use of “smart material” dates back to 1992, the way we define smart materiality has continued to evolve, “particularly given the expanding applications and advantages of these substances.” Things Fall Together: A Guide to the New Materials Revolution by Skylard Tibbits is a new book that offers the latest vision for how such materials approaches should be understood, and how the design field can benefit as a result.
