Metal Architecture recently announced the winners of this year’s 2020 Design Awards. More than 170 entries were received and 10 projects selected, in addition to one Grand Award Winner. The top honor went to the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design at Georgia Institute of Technology. “It’s beautiful and sustainable,” said judge Rick Harlan Schneider, AIA, APA, LEED AP, ISSTUDIOArchitects, Washington D.C. “Your first impression of this building is this light, airy structure that you could only build with steel. You could only do that in metal. Otherwise it gets chunky and clunky.” The project was completed in 2019 and is aiming for LEED Platinum certification, as well as being Living Building Challenge (LBC) certified from International Living Future Institute.
The building comprises approximately 47,000 square feet of programmable space, of which 37,000 square feet is enclosed and conditioned. Responsible for the design is Lord Aeck Sargent, a Katerra Company in collaboration with The Miller Hull Partnership. Skanksa USA served as General Contractor and MillerClapperton fabricated and installed more than 5,700 square feet of aluminum panels in three profiles, one of which was perforated. We are honored to be part of this outstanding project and the implications it has for influencing new building practices throughout the Southeast.
