How much do you know about rainscreens? “As a building envelope support mechanism, a rainscreen’s primary function is to shed water downwards and outwards out of the building. To do this, the exterior cladding is placed away from the backup wall, creating an air cavity that becomes a weather-resistant barrier.” There are two basic types of rainscreens as classified by the American Architectural Manufacturers Association (AAMA): drained, back-ventilated (AAMA 509-09) and pressure-equalized/pressure-moderated (AAMA 508-07). In a recent article in Metal Construction News, president of MillerClapperton, Zeke Miller, discusses the differences between the two types, as well as important things to consider when choosing a rainscreen system, plus common installation errors. Click below to read the full article and learn more about the basics of rainscreens.

This shift in thinking gives rise to the idea of movable structures that can transform into a temporary office, home, or even an entire community.

“Social media is changing urban planning, facilitating the shift from a  functional understanding of design to a formal and commercial one.” Behind a friendly veneer, spaces become sets for social media content, while complex systems of surveillance are being tested and developed. For years, Google Maps has been sending notifcations to its users when there is cool photo spot nearby, and we’re reminded that our Instagram feed could benefit from “a panoramic view of hypermodern architecture.” How is social media shaping the public sphere when architecture firms report designing spaces with the purpose of making them “Instagrammable”? Studios have gone so far as to admit this is top of mind when designing new projects.
