IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

It’s time for the 2019 Design Innovation report from Building Design+Construction (BD+C). The report encompasses projects, trends, intiatives, and teams that are pushing the limits of architectural design, space planning, and material innovation. Among this year’s most innovative front-runners are building facades that double as public art installations and an experimental hotel room that’s actually designed to help you sleep better. You can read more about these and even more projects by clicking the button below.

A new service center for Gulfstream Aerospace is being built on the east side of Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport, which will compliment its existing 679,199 square-foot main service center at the Georgia airfield.  The additional 202,000 square-foot building is expected reach completion this summer, at which time Gulfstream will have more than 1 million square feet of dedicate customer-support hangar space.  The new facility will offer a wide range of services, including aircraft-on-ground resources, hourly and calendar-driven airframe inspections, avionics installations and interior refurbishments.  MillerClapperton is fabricating and installing more than 6,200 square feet of Metal Composite Material for the project.

Recommendation: 99% Invisible Podcast

How did we ever go to the gym without podcasts? I love any podcast that can pull you into an interesting story or reveal previously ignored perspectives. The podcast “99% Invisible” does both.  Who would think that the creation and development of something as ubiquitous as shipping containers could be a fascinating 30-minute story? That’s what this show does: take a mundane or common object and reveal that we only see 1% of it. The episodes typically focus on Architecture, Infrastructure, or Technology and show the other 99% — design, engineering, cost, and calculation — that had been invisible to most of us.

This speaks to me particularly, as that is exactly what MillerClapperton tries to achieve with every project. It is difficult to describe our profession to others because, hopefully, they only see the 1%:  a beautiful exterior product melded seamlessly onto the façade of a building. No one can see the crucial elements that went into getting that product to that particular space – from design, engineering, fabrication, install, and all the hard work those entail. But the “99% Invisible” episodes remind me that we’re not alone in the elusive endeavor of creating a perfect 1% and keeping the rest invisible.
