IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

“Metal facades that change color with the sun, perforated metal, uniquely shaped panels—metal can seemingly do anything, and that’s part of why designers love it. gb&d magazine spoke with global design, architecture, engineering, and planning firm HOK as well as a leading manufacturer of metal panels Petersen (which makes the PAC-CLAD brand) about how they design with metal, its benefits, and how the material is changing.”

Metal is truly versatile and offers more flexibility than materials like glass, which have certain restrictions. You can also do things that you can’t do with concrete because metal can take any shape, which means you can get a lot of different looks out of the material. Read more about designing with metal below and learn how it was used for the Footprint Center (home of the Phoenix Suns), as well as other notable projects.

Recommendation: Asteroid City
Reviewed By: Architectural Digest

If you haven’t seen Asteroid City yet, we highly recommend it. Is it weird? Of course. It’s a Wes Anderson film after all. But the one thing he does so well is to create a backdrop that looks surreal by making it feel all the more dreamlike. Asteroid City is a fictional town in the middle of the desert and takes place in the mid-50s, where a “variety of factors converged to create a world with a very distinct stylistic and cultural point of view.” The tiny, technicolor town features a single gas station and luncheonette surrounded by red rocks and turquoise skies, but something about the town “looks strange”. Take a behind-the-scenes look at how the production came to life below. It’s pretty spectacular. And, we’ll leave you to ponder “you can’t wake up if you don’t go to sleep.”
