Before a global pandemic, we were spending more time at the office than ever before and sometimes, saw our colleagues more than we did our own families. Recently, those tables have turned, so what is in store for the future design of workplaces? While workplace trends have come and gone, what is on everyone’s minds is what a post COVID-19 office might look like in both the immediate and long term future. With no clear answers, architecture and real estate firms are looking to “implement forward-thinking design solutions and health safety policies, which will be critical in redefining how we utilize workplaces for years to come.” Keep reading for a brief history of workplace design and where it might be headed next.

Currently under construction at Contra Costa College is a new, 3-story building, which will house the entire science department with a total of 55,000 square feet. The first floor will have expanded biology labs and classrooms, and the third floor will feature labs for chemistry, engineering, physics, in addition to a new planetarium as well as a rooftop observation deck equipped with telescopes. For this project, MillerClapperton is fabricating 5,872 square feet of Metal Composite Material.

As urban centers continue to grow, there is an increasing need for alternative methods of transportation, which has given rise to bicycles. Award-winning British architectural design and engineering firm, Foster + Partners has launched a series of acitivie for children while at home. “The activities have been designed to engage the imagination of children, with fun briefs inviting young participants to build their own cities or create ‘fantastical’ skyscrapers with their families.” The first four challenges involve designs a paper skyscraper, creating a model city, drawing trees, and architecture-themed games.
