IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

To ensure a project is built properly, it’s important to work with companies and manufacturers you trust. The coordination between companies is critical to the success of projects. When it comes to metal fabrication, it’s important to select a qualified and experienced fabricator who knows how to complete projects properly and has the correct certifications and testing in place. And since you’re hopefully looking for a long-term partner, it’s important that they have the experience, capabilities, quality and reputation you can trust.

Metal Architecture discusses the importance of working with fabricators that have the skills, certifications, and the capabilities to complete projects of significant size and complexity. Our President, Zeke Miller, shines a light on these topics in the article below.

The new, 250,000-square-foot Outpatient Center will be the focal point of the northeast City of Hope Duarte campus. At the base of the San Gabriel mountains, the facility sits like a “boulder in a stream”, a reference to the alluvial plains and gravel quarries of the region. The outpatient clinic harnesses nature and views to create a compassionate, patient-centric approach while delivering the highest standard of cancer care through a flexible, multidisciplinary model with the latest technology. MillerClapperton will fabricate 1,900 square feet of Zinc-coated  Metal Composite Material for the project.

The Art Deco buildings of Ocean Drive have become synonymous with South Beach, which has over 800 of these types of structures, according to the National Register of Historic Places. Although a historic district was established back in 1979, Ocean Drive has become more commercial in recent decades. Despite the city’s near-constant transformation, the preservation of these Deco gems pay tribute to the city’s historic past as “architects and designers incorporate retro styles while also forging a new architectural path.” Dive into the evolution of architecture in Miami Beach below and click here for an interview with Charles Sieger, a Miami Architect as he discusses the city’s construction boom and designing buildings for the luxury buyer.

“Architectural photographer Marc Goodwin is putting together an Atlas of Architectural Arcmospheres, a project that seeks to document diverse architecture and design studios from around the world. Since 2016, the architectural photographer has been traveling far and wide to capture the atmospheres of architecture studios in order to produce an online and print resource for the architecture community.” Goodwin recently resumed his project following a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. His portfolio of work ranges from small-scale to large-scale practices, capturing the work environment of renowned firms such as Hesse, LAVA, and JWA, and showcases the diversity of architecture through images once context is factored in.

Recommendation: Engineering and Architecture
Produced By: Stewart Hicks

“Fazlur Rahman Khan was a pioneer in the structural engineering of tall buildings. After buildings exceed sixty stories height, gravity loads account for a smaller proportion of structural weight than wind loads. Khan developed the tubed truss tower design to stiffen the building at taller heights without adding significant weight. The tube design had the added consequence of pushing the structure out to the exterior of the building to become part of its architectural expression. However, the acceptance of visible steel trusses was a slow process that parallels the acceptance of engineering infrastructure like bridges as aesthetic productions.” In this segment of Architecture With Stewart, he traces the lineage of this process from Eiffel — who’s pylon designs look much like the Hancock Tower — to today.
