IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

Metal Architecture released the results of their 34th Annual Architects Survey last week. After a decade of construction growth, it’s not surprising to see robust reporting on firm growth, but the editors of Metal Architecture say the picture is a bit more complicated. While more than 11% of firms saw growth greater than 50% in 2019 compared to 2018, only 61% saw their billings increase compared to 79% the previous year. However, January’s Architecture Billing Index (ABI) shows that billings have been increasing for the past five consecutive months, while business conditions remain particularly robust for firms in the South.

When it came to metal wall panels, respondents increased the number of projects where they specified metal wall panels by 14% from 2018 to 2019. Looking ahead, just under 95% of respondents are planning to specify more or about the amount in 2020. The survey results also showed that respondents are more likely to specify a wider variety of panels, but the specification of metal composite panels decreased in 2019, while perforated metal panels increased slightly.  Composite panels, however, are significantly more popular in the East and West as compared to other regions. Recommendation: Alan Karchmer: The Architects’ Photographer
Where To See It: National Building Museum, Washington, DC

Alan Karchmer’s work has been featured in the architectural press worldwide, since his shot of the Stafford House in New Orleans was first published in 1980. He began photographing while in architecture school, and his career as a photographer took off after just a year into his architectural practice. He recently announced that he’ll be donating his archive to the National Building Museum in Washington, D.C., and to celebrate, the museum has mounted an exhibition that’s on view from March 13, 2020 to March 21, 2021.
