IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

“Few architectural materials are more widely admired than copper. Boasting unparalleled versatility and inherently advantageous composition, this adaptable metal can be formed into countless shapes and assemblies. Used in buildings for thousands of years, copper was employed by Egyptians, Romans, and most civilizations throughout history. Durable, aesthetically pleasing and malleable, copper changes color over time and adopts a thin coating known as a patina. Transforming from a bright russet color to brown, black, and green, copper effectively records both time and climate, allowing people to understand larger systems and site conditions. Copper tells a story. An element essential to all living organisms, it’s readily found within our own muscles and bones.”

Architizer has put together a collection featuring contemporary structures and facades that showcase copper’s ability to create powerful spatial experiences across public and private architecture. Click below to see some truly outstanding projects.

Uptown Atlanta, formerly known as the MARTA-connected Lindberg City Center, was one of the country’s first true transit-oriented developments when it debuted nearly 20 years ago. Under redevelopment by Rubenstein Partners, plans call for a “hyper-accessible” retail and work hub that includes public art and gathering spaces plus 1 million square feet of modernized, Class A office space.

Storefronts will be reconfigured to allow for more outdoor dining with covered searing areas and weekly events are planned on site that include art markets and outdoor yoga. Future plans call for the project to connect to the Atlanta BeltLine, PATH400, and South Fork Conservancy trails. MillerClapperton is fabricating and installing 6,400 square feet of Metal Composite Material, 2,500 square feet of Fiber Cement, 1,000 square feet of Plate Aluminum, and 1,200 square feet of Perforated Aluminum Plate for the project.

What was once old is new again and the city of Atlanta has become a shining example for urban renewal in the form of “renovation, reuse, and reimagination.” Big cities such as New York, Boston, and San Francisco have long made use of former warehouses and transportation facilities by converting them into useful and desirable real estate projects, but unlikely cities such as Denver and DesMoines, IA are following suit. But according to columnist Aaron Betsy, what’s happening in Atlanta is especially remarkable. He visits the Westside Provisions District and one of Atlanta’s largest reuse projects, Ponce City Market, which he says “present us with a strategy by which we could bring back life and give beauty to the remains of both our industrial and consumer eras.”

Last month, the American Institute of Architects announced the winners of its 2022 Architecture Awards, which “exemplify the best in contemporary architecture”. 11 international projects were chosen by a nine-member jury and evaluated on overall design achievement, considering a sense of place, purpose history, and environmental sustainability to underscore the ways that “buildings and spaces can improve lives.” Included in the awards is MillerClapperton project, the Kendeda Building for Innovative Sustainable Design in Atlanta, designed by Miller Hull Partnership in collaboration with Lord Aeck Sargent. MillerClapperton fabricated and installed more than 5,700 square feet of aluminum panels for project, consisting of three different profiles, one of which was perforated.
