Location: Richmond, VA
Products: Alucobond (MCM)
General Contractor: DPR Construction
Architect: HKS Inc.
Completed in April 2023, the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) Children’s Tower is part of a comprehensive plan to address the health and wellness of that state’s youngest residences. Expanding the existing outpatient Children’s Pavilion, the new tower creates an entire city block dedicated to pediatric health care.
The 565,000-square-foot, 16-story building houses trauma and emergency care, 72 private rooms for acute and intensive care; increased capacity for imaging services; family amenities including playrooms and performance spaces, Ronald McDonald House Charities rooms and outdoor gardens, as well as spaces for collaboration and education.
The building’s design establishes a bold, signature identity with a yellow ribbon across the façade that visually stitches the tower and pavilion together, while colorful fins along the exterior highlight the tower’s identity as a children’s hospital. MillerClapperton fabricated and installed 6,200 square feet of Metal Composite Material (MCM) on the wing walls for the project.
