Craft workers form the foundation of the construction industry, with their expertise and frontline knowledge driving projects forward. Despite fluctuations in unemployment rates, their roles as office and skilled workers remain indispensable, emphasizing the need for initiatives that prioritize engagement and inclusivity. Encouraging active participation in safety meetings and project planning fosters a culture where every voice matters, enhancing job site safety and efficiency. Human and Organizational Performance (HOP) principles underscore the importance of acknowledging fallibility and fostering open communication, with programs like Craft Voice in Safety (CVIS) facilitating direct communication between workers and executives. Construction Safety Week serves as a platform to reinforce these values, partnering with OSHA for a massive construction stand-down to promote safety culture and craft engagement, ultimately striving to create safer and more inclusive work environments.

The 1.2 million-square-foot brewery and production facility in Columbia, South Carolina, stands as the largest brewery built in the United States in over 25 years. The project represents a $400 million investment in Richland County. The brewery produces 80 million cases annually, facilitated by an extensive infrastructure of over 14 miles of process piping, 3 miles of underground plumbing, and 17 miles of utilities piping. The packaging area includes three types of lines for various product mixes and options, while a high-tech finished goods storage area incorporates an automatic guided vehicle (AGV) system for efficient handling. MillerClapperton fabricated and installed approximately 3,500 square feet of Metal composite material panels for this project.

June 2023 marked the planet’s hottest month on record, with temperatures soaring to unprecedented levels, particularly in Iran, where the heat index reached a staggering 66.7 degrees Celsius. Scientists attribute this alarming trend to human-induced climate change and the intensification of the El Niño phenomenon, exacerbated by the natural warming of Pacific Ocean waters. As heatwaves sweep across regions worldwide, cities are grappling with strategies to adapt to extreme heat, ranging from redesigning roads and public spaces to planting trees and revisiting ancient cooling techniques. Initiatives such as white rooftop coatings and the introduction of “heat chiefs” underscore the urgent need for resilience in the face of escalating heat risks.

In the complex world of construction quality management, ensuring projects are completed to the highest standards with minimal disruption is paramount. While quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) are often used interchangeably, they serve distinct purposes. QA encompasses proactive activities aimed at preventing defects and mitigating risks, typically outlined in a project quality plan (PQP). On the other hand, QC involves post-action evaluations, inspections, and tests to verify compliance with standards. Robust QA processes enhance safety measures, streamline project management, and drive cost savings over the project lifecycle. Investing in people, processes, and technology for quality assurance always yields long-term dividends in construction.
