#1 DESIGN WITHOUT GRAVITY

It’s very possible that the future will hold the opportunity for architects to build in outer space, but for now, those chances are slim.  Have you wondered what that would look like?  A recent article in ArchDaily looks at how conventional design principles go out the window when dealing with zero gravity.

2018 marks 20 years since construction first began on the International Space Station.  Take a journey into space and look at how lines of lighting and other visual cues help to define the space when it’s not clear which way is up.  Click here to read.

#2 TEN FAMOUS PEOPLE WHO ARE ALSO ARCHITECTS

Most stars are better known for their rise to pop culture fame through their musical or acting abilities, but you’d never know that some of these famous faces are also architects.  We love a little trivia!  Do you know who is featured in the picture above?  It’s the acclaimed musical ensemble, Pink Floyd.  Did you know 3 of the band’s 5 members met while studying architecture at the Polytechnic in London, now known as the Westminster?  They even released an album called: ‘Music for Architectural Students’.  Click here to see other famous people (including politicians) who are also architects.

#3 CONSTRUCTION SAFETY WEEK

It’s always our goal to get the job done safely and we proudly recognize the hard work of our installation teams who make this happen.  This week is all about safety on construction sites across the U.S. and the theme for this year’s awareness effort is ‘We are Stronger & Safer Together’.

Comprised of 80 national and global construction firms, the Construction Industry Safety (CISI) group and Incident and Injury Free CEO (IIF) Forum have joined forces with a single aim: to inspire everyone in the industry to be leaders in safety.  To read safety stories from across the industry or to learn more about the work of CISI, click here and check-out all of the industry updates from the past week using #SafetyWeek on Twitter and Instagram.

#4 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

UF Innovation Hub
Back in November, we gave you a look at the progress of our work on this exciting project, which is located just two blocks from the University of Florida’s main campus.  The Florida Innovation HUB is a 48,000 (soon-to-be 100,000) square foot facility that serves as the cornerstone of Innovation Square, by providing an incubator for start-up companies based on technologies emerging from university laboratories.

After successfully completing the panels for the original project, MillerClapperton fabricated and installed nearly 24,000 square feet of Metal Composite Material panels from Reynobond and another 24,000 square feet of 24-gauge PAC-CLAD profiled single skin panels for the expansion. The latest updates to the facility doubles the size of available space, which is already home to three-dozen technology-based startup companies.

Location: Gainesville, Florida
Material: Metal Composite Material and Single Skin Panels
Products: Reynobond and PAC-CLAD
General Contractor: Charles Perry Partners
Architect: Ponikvor & Associates

The exterior of the building is also getting a new, modern look with a fresh entrance including three canopies clad with 10,000 square feet of Metal Composite Material panels.  MillerClapperton is fabricating and installing 442 panels for the project.
