IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

The role of an architect has evolved over time. Historically, architecture was viewed as a one-man show, but in recent decades, the practice has become more collaborative and less individualistic. As a result, there is less focus on what some call “starchitects” and a “shifting realization that architecture is made better when different perspectives and skills are brought to the drawing board.” “Only a few centuries ago, architecture was hardly thought of as a profession. It was taught in the form of apprenticeship, and something that could only be learned by shadowing other architects willing to mentor you.” Keep reading about the evolution of the design profession below.

Colorful and photogenic cities around the world are a big draw for architects and tourists alike. Visitors who travel by air have the chance to get a unique perspective and view these colorful places from above, which can be just as impressive, if not more so. With a variety of shapes and colors, rooftops can paint their own beautiful picture of a city and create a visually appealing backdrop. The reasons behind using color varies as some places use color for roofing as a climate strategy, while others embrace color as tradition. Pictured above is Las Palmas of the Canary Islands and below you’ll find more incredible images from countries like Italy and Bangkok.
