IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

What was once seen as a “delusion of grandeur” when the world’s first “skyscraper” was built in 1870 in Manhattan, became a necessity as urban populations and land prices increased by the end of the century. It was cost-effective to build up and the earliest tall buildings were often home to communications giants like the New York Tribune and Western Union.

“Highrise construction exploded across the US after the turn of the 20th century. In New York, the record for the world’s tallest building was broken six times between 1908 and 1931 — more than doubling in height from the 612-foot Singer Building to the 1,250-foot Empire State Building.” Today, there are 191 “supertall” skyscrapers (above 984 tall) according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat. (CTBUH). A short video about how skyscrapers have evolved can be seen below, as well as what challenges face architects of tall buildings today.

Recommendation: Megastructure: Urban Futures of the Recent Past
Reviewed By: Anthony Vidler
The 1976 book, Megastructure: Urban Futures of the Recent Past written by Reyner Banham, which was widely unavailable until now, has been reprinted. The latest version includes a foreword by Banham historian Todd Gannon and the release is especially timely as “urban-planning and utopian projects of the late 1960s and ’70s are increasingly under critical review, assessed as monumental failures subject to demolition or aesthetic exemplars of their age demanding preservation.” The book provides a detailed history of the short-lived “meagastructural” movement and its various manifestations.
