IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

This week, the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Committee on the Environment (COTE), announced the recipients of the 2020 COTE Top 10 Awards. The awards would have typically been announced in conjunction with Earth Day, but were delayed due to the coronavirus. This year’s recipients are a diverse group and certainly vary in terms of building type, usage, and geographic locale. Gensler made a particularly strong showing with a total of three recognized projects.

The winning projects include an adaptive reuse effort in which a defunct recycling center was transformed into creative office space and a border crossing facility in the Chihuahuan Desert that’s architecture “serves and respects all people, embraces culture, conserves resources, nurtures ecology, protects habitat, celebrates diversity, and conveys a love of the land.” Keep reading to see the complete list of award recipients.

The combination of diffuse lighting, spatial distribution, and high ceilings can transform a room itself, in addition to using elements that can be perforated or repainted to adapt to each exhibition. These unique spaces, using a variety of design solutions can express a beautiful dialogue between art and architecture. Click below for 23 art gallery projects from around the world.

It should be no surprise that the state of Florida is one of the most populous states in the country, thanks to its size and abundance of beautiful weather. It is also home to two largely populated areas Jacksonville and Miami, but it’s unique architecture stands out among the rest. The state’s African, indigenous, and Spanish-American heritage is strongly reflected in its local architecture, and especially in residential projects where climate and location are as much an influence as its earliest inhabitants.

Recommendation: Virtual Exhibitions and Student Projects
Shared By: Architect’s Newspaper
This year’s graduating architecture students could not have predicted this kind of ending to their post-secondary education, yet here we are. While social distancing forced school closures, and students went from studio halls to online portals, some serious questions have been posed about models of architectural pedagogy, but most importantly, what about the work itself? Architect’s Newspaper has put together a baker’s dozen of virtual year-end exhibitions that showcase some of this year’s best student projects. From Harvard’s Graduate School of Design to the University of Pennsylvania’s Stuart Weitzman School of Design, we invite you to view this year’s collection of work.
