#1 2018 COTE Top Ten Awards

The AIA Committee on the Environment (COTE) announced the winners of the 2018 COTE Top Ten Awards.  The 22nd annual program recognized buildings that exemplify the cutting edge of sustainable design.  Included in this year’s honorees is Georgia Tech’s Engineered Biosystems Building (EBB) in our hometown of Atlanta, GA.  Designed by Lake|Flako Architects and Copper Cary in Atlanta, the project contains 200,000 square feet of technologically advanced laboratories for faculty, researchers and students to pursue Georgia Tech’s growing research agenda for biological sciences.  The EBB is a leap forward in creating the infrastructure that inspires and sustains scientific discovery at Georgia Tech.  To see the full list of winners recognized by the AIA, click here.

#2 ‘Facial Recognition’ for Buildings

Facial recognition technology has been available for years – and you’re most likely familiar with this advanced software through the all too familiar action of tagging friends or family on social apps.  In this article from FastCoDesign, author Peter Christensen realizes the same technology can be used to perform facial recognition on buildings or better known as architectural biometrics.  Rather than a 10th-century mosque with the face of a 21st-century human, Christensen explores how we can begin to analyze buildings by thinking of them as objects with biometric identities.  Read more here.

#3 Must-Stay AirBnBs

If you’re like us, you’ve been thinking about summer vacation for months now.  We also love cool hotels as much as the next person, but this article helps narrow down the most coveted destinations to add to the bucketlist, all available on AirBnB.  And, if you haven’t booked your summer vacation yet, get ready to be inspired!  Included on the list is this architectural masterpiece with an open floor plan and tons of windows that offer an incredible view of the city of Rotterdam in The Netherlands.  For more great options, see the complete list here.

#4 PROJECT SPOTLIGHT

FSU Academic Center for Excellence (ACE)
The Academic Center of Excellence (ACE) on Florida State University’s Panama City campus overlooks North Bay and doubled the academic capacity for the campus.  The 105,000 square foot facility includes laboratories for engineering and criminology in addition to underwater crime scene investigations.  Also housed in this 3-story building are 21 classrooms, a library and learning center.

MillerClapperton fabricated and installed nearly 4,000 square feet of Metal Composite Material panels, which accent the top of the rotunda at the center’s main entrance, as well as the soffits and columns lining the drive to the main entry.

#5 CURRENT PROJECT

Wheaton Library & Community Recreation Center
Located in Silver Spring, MD, this project will feature unique elements, incorporating typical library resources with physical fitness and community services.  The gym will be on par with the largest in the county, with an elevated track on the second level above the basketball courts.  The center will also feature a social hall, children’s library, a teen area and a used bookstore on the western side of the building.  Outdoor features include a drive-up book drop and sizable green space.

The exterior of the building will feature 9,500 square feet of High-Pressure Laminate (HPL) panels from Fundermax, which will add texture and allow the designers to create a welcoming color scheme.  MillerClapperton is fabricating and installing the HPL panels for this project.
