IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

We’ve recently shared articles about the future of workplace design post-pandemic and what the impact may be to traditional workspaces. Speculation and debates continue over whether or not “we will return to our habits of working in the office 5 days a week, or if working from home creates equal or greater productivity. However, many believe that the future of the workforce will largely be focused on a balance between in-person and in-office working, and a form of remote working that summates into a new, hybrid model.” What if you aren’t in the office, and you don’t want to be cooped up in your home office any longer? In between public and private spaces lies a magical middle ground called the “third” place. It’s less enigmatic than it sounds. “If you’ve ever studied for an exam at a bookstore, or even dropped into an airport restaurant to catch up on some work, then you too, have visited a “third place”.” The desire for these spaces has increased significantly as people consider life after Covid-19. So, what makes them successful and will we see more of them in the future? Keep reading to find out.

The past year upended many routines and interrupted even bigger systems including transportation from travel by rail to air travel. Airlines in particular were forced to keep some seats empty and even grounded flights where necessary. The site of empty runways and grounded planes could be depressing for some, but for one aerial photographer, he saw it as an once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. With flights canceled and air traffic at a minimum, Hegen was granted access to six of Germany’s largest airports. Click to see more of Hegen’s work and to learn about his new book, “Aerial Observations on Airports”.

Recommendation: Jessica O. Matthews and Wanona Satcher at 2021 Inc. Vision Summit
Produced By: Inc.
At the recent 2021 Inc. Vision Summit, founder of Uncharted Power, Jessica O. Matthews and Makhers Studio founder Wanona Satcher, discussed their visions for urban development. “The Covid-19 pandemic has drastically altered how people live, work, and interact with one another. Nowhere is this more evident than in cities, whose future function and roles in our lives seem far less clear following the transformation that has taken place over the past year.” Inc. editor-at-large Kimberly Weisul sat down with Matthews and Satcher to discuss the future of cities and the solutions they are championing.
