IN THIS WEEK’S FRIDAY5

Overcrowding of cities has become one of the world’s most pressing issues with the population expected to reach 10 billion people by the middle of this century. As the needs of people and communities evolve, there will be a direct impact on the issue of overcrowding and on our built environment. And, those needs are changing faster than ever, which is a challenge when it comes to designing new spaces or modernizing existing ones.

At the 2nd edition of the Architecture of the Future conference, industry professionals discussed emerging technologies and how different professions and technologies are shaping the future of architecture – from futuristic cities, to houses, even extraterrestrial architecture. Location: Atlanta, GA
Product: ALUCOBOND PLUS (MCM)
General Contractor: Balfour Beatty
Architect: Brock Hudgins Architects

The Osprey is a new, 12-story apartment building taking shape on the Upper Westside of Atlanta at the corner of 10th and Howell Mill. Once completed, the building will house 319 luxury apartments with skyline views, and 13,000 square feet of street-level retail and restaurant space. Additional amenities include a resort-style swimming pool, fitness center, sky lounge, and pet spa.

This is also the first building in Atlanta to utilize a new modular metal framing process that allowed for a quicker and more precise process than building with traditional materials. The improvement in efficiency allowed the builder to ultimately set aside a share of units as affordable housing. For this project, MillerClapperton will be fabricating and installing 1,496 square feet of Metal Composite Material.

Recommendation: Bjarke Ingels Explores Living and Building on Mars
Produced By: TED Talk

Bjarke Ingels Group has been working on the Mars Science City project after the United Arab Emirates first announced the initiative in 2017. The $140 million research city aims to serve as a “viable and realistic model” for the simulation of human occupation on the planet, and it is poised to become the largest space simulation city ever constructed. There are expected to be program pieces for both researchers and visitors, including laboratories for the study of food, energy, and water; landscape for agricultural testing; and a museum celebrating humanity’s greatest space achievements. Click below to hear the full TED Talk, An Architect’s Guide to Living on Mars.
