Welcome to the MillerClapperton Friday5 e-newsletter where you will stay up to date on the latest industry news and design trends, as well as what we are working on here at MillerClapperton in 5 quick points!

#1 NOTABLE FIBER CEMENT FACADES

Fiber cement is gaining popularity as a cladding material thanks to it being lightweight, non-combustible, and rain-resistant.  Composed of cement, cellulose, and mineral fibers, fiber cement creates facades with different textures, colors, and tones, which make it remarkably versatile for a wide range of applications.  We invite you to view 9 projects that have cleverly used fiber cement as the primary material in facades here.

MillerClapperton also has a range of systems available (with both concealed and exposed fasteners), that are engineered for fiber cement material.  To learn more, click here.

#2 ARCHITECTURAL PHOTOGRAPHY WITH SCARY PEOPLE

If you haven’t gotten your fill of spooky and creepy this week, we may have just what you need.  To celebrate Halloween, we’re sharing a collection of photos that highlight phantoms from the beyond that have entered the architectural realm.  Click here to see more – we dare you.

#3 DESIGNING FOR COLD WEATHER

It may feel warmer than usual this time of year, but winter is still coming whether we like or not.  While we have a relatively mild winter here in Georgia, we can’t ignore cold weather regions, which may pose unique challenges for architects and installing subcontractors alike.  Freezing temperatures and precipitation can ultimately lead to problems that harm the structural integrity of the building envelope and the comfort of its occupants.  For this reason, there are a variety of factors to consider when selecting materials for the building envelope.  Read more about how you can create a building that can withstand the elements here.

#5 CURRENT PROJECT

Wheaton Library & Community Recreation Center
Located in Silver Spring, MD, the Wheaton Library and Community Recreation Center is currently under construction.  Once completed, the project will feature a reading room and gym on par with the largest in the county.  The second level will host an elevated track (above the basketball courts) in addition to computer labs, a craft’s room, pottery room, vendor cafe and social hall.  The vibrant colored High-Pressure Laminate panels selected for the facade will add texture and allows the designers to create a welcoming color scheme.  MillerClapperton is currently fabricating and installing 9,506 square feet of exterior cladding for the project, which is also designed to achieve LEED Silver Certification.
